The world’s tallest residential timber building has been completed in Docklands, Melbourne.
Forté is 10-storeys high and was built by Lend Lease using cross-laminated timber (CLT) instead of the conventional concrete or structural steel methods.
Instead of pre-cast concrete or structural steel beams, giant slabs of timber were used to construct the main walls and floors for this building, a first for Australia.
One of the key elements of the design is the environmental benefits of using timber. With the structure built entirely from CLT, Forté will reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes. Despite the strong preference for timber on this project, some things just can’t be done efficiently or effectively with timber, and every floor of Forté contains a great deal of metal building systems from Studco Building Systems® which is all manufactured under Studco’s ISO 14001 environmental management standard.
Ceilings throughout are constructed using Studco ceiling components, including acoustic ceiling mounts in ceilings with cavities of only 50mm! A mix of Studco’s patented Slimceil® ceiling system and Studco’s popular concealed suspended ceiling system have combined to create maximum interior clearance height whilst maintaining strict observance of fire and acoustic requirements.
Studco® sales team and Studco Technical Services personnel worked closely with the building contractors on site throughout construction to provide building solutions for each aspect of the project.
